Château L’Enclos

—

by

Since 2007, Château L’Enclos has been part of the Adams family’s story on Bordeaux’s Right Bank. Set on the sunlit western slope of Pomerol’s plateau, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and historic Malbec vines take root in iron-rich soils, communicating an intimate terroir of remarkable depth, elegance, and character.

Style

Silken and velvety on the palate, the wines of Château L’Enclos unfold with a supple, seamless texture and beautifully refined tannins. These bottlings reward patience, drinking beautifully anywhere from 5 to 20 years after each September release. Merlot forms the majority of the blend, followed by Cabernet Franc and Malbec.

Vineyard

Averaging 40 years of age, the vines of Château L’Enclos extend across nine hectares on three terraces along Pomerol’s western slope. Sand and gravel give way to clay and the distinctive iron-rich crasse de fer beneath, creating a mosaic of soils as the vineyard descends toward the valley. The vineyard is certified organic and Biodynamic, with each parcel tended individually to nurture the vitality of the soils and preserve the distinctive character of this remarkable Pomerol terroir.

Winemaking

Selected grapes are kept whole, for complexity, freshness, and structure. Fermentation unfolds naturally with native yeasts born of the vineyard, allowing each parcel to speak in its own voice. The wine is then aged for 16 months in 500-liter French oak barrels: 30 percent new, 30 percent one year old, and 40 percent two years old. This gentle élevage refines the tannins and builds a silken, seamless texture, while the oak remains subtle and beautifully integrated.

At Château L’Enclos, winemaking focuses on highlighting the finesse and softness of the tannins imparted by the gravelly terroirs. The different plots are vinified separately, and a portion of the grapes is left whole to add greater aromatic complexity and structure, and to reflect the personality of each terroir. The wine is then aged in 500-liter barrels, a choice that refines the tannins while imparting a subtle and perfectly integrated oak character.
